Mahé island
The largest of the Seychelles islands, Mahé, is the main hub of the nation. It connects the islands to the rest of the world with its International Airport located at Pointe Larue.
Victoria, the capital of Seychelles, is the main town and the country’s central economic zone. This is where all the major businesses are located, including the office of the President and other government buildings.
Mahé is home to 90% of the Seychelles population, most of which is found in the northern and eastern parts of the island. The island itself measures 28km long and 8km wide. It is possible to drive around the entire island in approximately 2 hours, so no two locations are considered far apart.
The highest point of Mahé is Morne Seychellois, which stands at 905m and is in the Morne Seychellois National Park, a popular attraction for both tourists and locals.
It’s easy to book a leisurely drive around the island in a taxi. Most taxi’s offer this kind of trip and will even point out the major landmarks and provide you with tons of interesting information along the way.
If you’d rather explore on foot, the public buses are also an option*. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water and dress cool and comfortably.
On any trip around Mahé, as with Seychelles in general, you will see and discover the vibrant colours of the beautiful flowers and fruit plants, the mountains, winding roads and gorgeous beaches. It’s not only a nature lover’s paradise but also a photographers dream.
Over the years, new areas of land reclamation have added to Mahé’s total area. Among these are Eden Island, where luxury apartments and a hotel have been built, and Perseverance, where local housing has been constructed.
As well as being the main link to the rest of the world, Mahé also connects the other inner and outer islands. Its domestic flights, ferries, excursion centres and other island-hopping adventures all originate from here.
*The latest Covid-19 regulations put in place by the Seychelles government and Health Ministry do not allow tourists to use public transport. Buses are currently not an option therefore.
