When people think of Seychelles, they typically think of romantic holidays and honeymoons. But the Seychelles is also a great holiday destination for families. There are lots of family-friendly activities to keep both children and adults entertained and ensure a fun-filled tropical holiday. Here are some fun family-friendly activities to try during your holiday in Seychelles.
Beaches are almost always top of the list of things to do when visiting Seychelles. After all, tropical island equals sun, sea and palm trees, right?!
Beaches are fun, relaxing and best of all – free. There’s no entry fee or bookings to be made. Just grab your swimsuit, sunscreen, some water and head out.
No matter where you’re staying in Seychelles, the beach is never far away and there are so many stunning beaches to choose from. You can also check out our post on the most beautiful beaches in the Seychelles.
Beaches are perfect examples of family-friendly activities because they have something for everyone, whether it’s swimming, playing in the sand, sunbathing, or just relaxing in the shade. You’ll find lovely shady spots to retreat to if the sun gets too intense, which can happen, especially during midday. That’s why it’s important to stay hydrated and always have sunscreen on.
The only thing to be aware of in relation to the beaches in Seychelles is that some have stronger currents than others. These beaches are generally not recommended for families with small children or for under-confident swimmers. Beaches with strong currents, such as Intendance, will have signs in place warning visitors.
That being said, most of the beaches in Seychelles are very safe, but obviously children should always be accompanied and supervised.
Getting involved in some water sports is another great way to spend the day. These types of activities are however more appropriate for slightly older children.
The best place to do this on Mahé is at Beau Vallon Beach. By strolling along the beach, you will come across various locations where you can rent the necessary equipment. Some of the activities offered are jet-skiing, wind-surfing, banana boat rides, water-skiing, and parasailing. There are also diving and snorkelling facilities available along the beach.
Many hotels will also offer their own water sport activities, so it’s worth checking out what’s on offer with hotels you’re considering.
The Botanical Gardens is located on the main island of Mahé in the district of Mont Fleuri. This is located just outside of the capital, Victoria. The Botanical Gardens is a 6 hectare area of land featuring many exotic and endemic species and is over 100 years old. It’s possible to spend quite some time wandering around and observing the different flora and fauna, including the giant tortoises and Seychelles’ unique Coco De Mer.
This is an especially great experience for children who love marine life and animals in general. It’s so much fun seeing the colourful fish swim around beneath you. There may also be opportunities to feed the fish, which is always a hit with kids. Many operators offer day excursions on the boat that include snorkelling, visiting nearby islands, as well as organising a typical Creole lunch.
The Turquoise Horse Trails located at Barbarons on Mahé offers horse-back riding through a jungle trail to Barbarons beach. They offer short rides through the jungle for smaller children and beginner riders too.
A trip to La Digue has to include a visit to L’union Estate. This park features much of La Digue’s colonial historical past.
You can visit the old Plantation House as well as the old copra mill. There is also a large giant tortoise enclosure, a vanilla plantation and the cemetery where some of the first settlers of La Digue are buried. To top it off, at the end of the walk is the famous Anse Source d’Argent beach, voted on a number of occasions as one of the most beautiful in the world.
As far as family-friendly activities go, the Curieuse Marine National Park has to be one of the best options. It’s a great place to spend the day. There are trails around the island where you can view many endemic species. This includes the Coco De Mer palm which, aside from Praslin’s Vallée De Mai, is the only place where they grow naturally.
Have lunch and spend some time relaxing on the beach while enjoying the company of the hundreds of free-roaming giant tortoises. This is a treat for both children and adults as you are able to interact with these friendly creatures.
