La Digue Island

La Digue, although the third most populated island in Seychelles, with just under 3000 residents, is actually the fourth largest in terms of area. The island itself is only about 10km² and situated approximately 50km away from Mahé.

La Digue does not have an airport so travel to the island is by the ferry which docks at the port at La Passe. The area is also filled with restaurants, shops, including souvenir shops, as well as bicycle rentals.

Unlike Mahé and Praslin, La Digue has held on to some more traditional ways. There are only a few cars on the island and people mostly get around by either walking, cycling or by ox-cart. Traditional activities such as copra and boat building also still take place on La Digue.

The small island boasts some other significant tourist attractions such as the giant Aldabra tortoise enclosure, the vanilla plantation as well as the old cemetery where the first settlers are buried.

The beautiful beach of Anse Source d’Argent is also worth mentioning as it also regularly makes the list of most beautiful beaches in the world. It’s a must-see for tourists with its white sands, turquoise waters and green palms.

The majority of the tourist accommodation on La Digue is in the form of guest houses and small hotels. They tend to have a more homely and personal atmosphere than the large, luxurious hotels.
